Dirty makeup brushes got you breaking out? Here’s how to fix it!

One of my patients recently asked what they could use to treat a rash that developed from using dirty makeup brushes. If this sounds familiar, don’t worry—this is an easy fix. With a few simple steps, you can soothe your skin and prevent it from happening again.

How to Treat a Rash Caused by Dirty Makeup Brushes

    1. Use Hydrocortisone Cream
For minor rashes, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream works wonders.

Apply a small amount to clean, dry skin. This helps reduce inflammation and itching, giving your skin the chance to heal. Personally, I always keep a tube on hand because it’s a lifesaver for these situations.

    2. Pause Your Makeup Routine
Avoid using makeup until the rash clears up completely. Continuing to apply makeup can irritate the rash further and delay healing.

    How to Prevent Future Rashes

The best way to avoid a rash from dirty makeup brushes is to adopt good skincare and hygiene habits. Here are my top tips:

    1. Clean Your Makeup Brushes Weekly
Wash your brushes with a gentle soap or a dedicated brush cleaner once a week. Make sure to rinse thoroughly and let them air dry completely before using them again. Regular cleaning prevents bacteria, oil, and makeup residue from building up.
    2. Wash Your Face Twice Daily
Clean your face morning and night with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt, oil, and makeup. Keeping your skin clean reduces the risk of irritation and breakouts.
    3. Avoid Touching Your Face
Resist the urge to touch your face with unwashed hands. Your hands carry dirt and bacteria, which can transfer to your skin and clog pores.
    4. Change Pillowcases Weekly
Your pillowcase collects dirt, oil, and bacteria over time, so it’s important to wash it regularly. Changing your pillowcases and bed linens at least once a week can make a big difference in keeping your skin healthy.

Dirty makeup brushes can be a sneaky culprit behind skin rashes, but with the right care, you can quickly treat and prevent them. Keeping your tools clean, practicing good skincare, and maintaining a hygienic environment are simple yet effective steps to protect your skin.

If your rash doesn’t improve with these tips or worsens, consult your healthcare provider to rule out other causes and get tailored treatment.
