One of the drugs that I have to talk to patients a lot about is Amoxicillin suspension. This is a common antibiotic that I dispense and I always want to make sure parents, know what to expect when giving this drug to their children

  • you may start to feel better but it is important to continue taking it as prescribed and also to finish the course of therapy
  • skipping doses or not completing the course of treatment will increase the likelihood of bacteria developing resistance therefore decreasing your antibiotic treatment options in the future
  • make sure child eats before giving the antibiotic to prevent nausea, vomiting and stomach pain
  • you may get diarrhea which usually ends when the antibiotic is discontinued
  • take with probiotics or yogurt to reduce risk of getting diarrhea
  • however you may develop watery bloody stools even as late as 2 months after taking your last dose of antibiotic. If this happens contact your doctor.
