A lot of patients visit the pharmacy complaining of sore throats. Sore throats can be a common discomfort, but they can also be a sign of something more serious.

Whether you’re dealing with a sore throat caused by a viral infection, allergies, or something else, here are some simple ways to find relief—and when to know if it’s time to see a doctor.
Home Remedies for a Sore Throat

  • Gargle Warm Salt Water
One of the most effective ways to soothe a sore throat is by gargling with warm salt water. The salt helps reduce swelling and can ease irritation. Simply mix about half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of warm water and gargle several times a day.
  • Drink Plenty of Fluids
Staying hydrated is essential when you have a sore throat. Drinking water, herbal teas, or broths helps keep your throat moist and can provide relief from dryness and irritation. Avoid drinks that can be too acidic or irritating, like citrus juices or caffeinated beverages.
  • Suck on Lozenges (For Those Over 4 Years Old)
Lozenges can be helpful for soothing a sore throat. They provide moisture and a mild numbing effect that can reduce pain. Just make sure the person is old enough to safely suck on a lozenge (usually 4 years or older).
